FACE TO FACE
Robert Manthoulis | Greece | 1966 | 80 min.

A fierce satire of the nouveau riche brought about by the Athens urban bubble of the 1960s and the crowning piece of the Greek New Wave, Face to Face was quickly censored after the 1967 coup d'état, which led to a military dictatorship. At its presentation in Cannes, Manthoulis made statements against the military regime that forced him to go into exile in France. It tells the story of a wealthy couple who hire a poor and shy English teacher for their daughter, who is about to marry a British businessman. Teacher and student fall in love in a situation marked by class stigma that will lead to an explosive denouement. A restoration from the Greek Film Archive.
