Joanna Hogg, to whom we dedicated a retrospective in 2018, secretly filmed this mysterious psychological gothic tale during her confinement in Wales, in which Tilda Swinton doubles as a mother and daughter. Continuing the universe drawn in the diptych The Souvenir, a filmmaker takes her mother to a hotel in the countryside for her birthday. A hotel formerly her mother's residence as a child, it is now a ghostly place with no other guests. Secrets from the past lurk, a film that is both an examination of a complex family relationship, and a woman's journey of self-discovery.
