19 Festival de Sevilla Awards. 4-12 nov 2022

PARTICIPATION AND CALL FOR ENTRIES FOR THE AWARDS OF THE 19TH EDITION OF THE SEVILLE EUROPEAN FILM FESTIVAL 2022

In 2022, the 19th edition will be held from 4 to 12 November 2022, both inclusive, in the city of Seville.


SECTIONS

The competitive and non-competitive sections are established in the Festival's terms and conditions approved by the Board of Directors of the ICAS.

Competitive Sections 

A) Official Section. A selection of European-produced or co-produced films of outstanding cinematographic quality and circulation potential.

B) The New Waves · Official Selection. Offering pioneering values and/or unique perspectives on contemporary European cinema.

C) The New Waves /Non_Fiction · Official Selection. European (co-)produced documentary feature films in the non-fiction sphere with innovative perspectives on reality. The works selected for competition will have a minimum duration of 50 minutes.

D) Endless Revolutions · Official Selection. Endless Revolutions is a selection of feature films made by independent filmmakers of the European scene, whose work is notable for its bold and daring spirit. The works selected for competition will have a minimum duration of 50 minutes.

E) Extraordinary Stories · Official Selection. The space of the festival for an open, warm, direct cinema, composed of European (co)productions that narrate universal stories through a fresh visual style.

F) EFA Selection (European Film Academy). In collaboration with the European Film Academy (EFA), this section features films that have been shortlisted for the European Film Awards corresponding to the year of the Festival.

G) Andalusian Panorama. Feature Films and Short_Films. A selection of recent full-length and short films (30 minutes maximum) audiovisual works (co)produced by Andalusian companies, or directed by Andalusian filmmakers.

H) Cinephiles of the future. Feature length sessions of European production or co-production, of special interest for a young audience.

I) Europa Junior. Feature films of European production or co-production of special interest for children.

 

Non-Competitive Sections

A) Retrospectives, cycles and special screenings. Sections specifically dedicated to reviewing and highlighting the work of specific creators, as well as schools or trends whose creative work is considered relevant.

B) Cinephile Window. An online section made up of films for the younger audiences and aimed at stimulating the cinephilia of the future.

C) EFA Shorts on Tour. A program composed of short films previously selected and nominated by the European Film Academy for the European Film Awards corresponding to the year of the Festival.

 

AWARDS 
‣ Official Section

GOLDEN GIRALDILLO for the Best Film of the OFFICIAL SECTION, with an economic endowment of €35.000 in the case that the film is registered by a Spanish distribution company. Otherwise, the amount allocated will be €20,000 awarded to the company which entered the film in the competition. Additionally, a prize of €15,000 will be attributed to the distributor once they acquire the commercial exhibition rights in Spain, once they acquire the commercial exhibition rights in Spain, and as long as the commercial release takes place within twelve months of the closing ceremony of the competition.

GRAND JURY Award of the OFFICIAL SECTION, with a prize of €25.000 if the film is submitted by a Spanish distribution company. Otherwise, the amount granted will be €15,000 for the company that has registered the film in the competition. Additionally, an award worth €10,000 will be allocated to the distributor once they acquire the commercial exhibition rights in Spain, subject to the commercial release taking place within twelve months of the closing date of the competition.

The Awards for Best Direction, Best Script, Best Editing, Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Cinematography of the films in the Official Section have also been established. These awards will have no monetary endowment.

‣ The New Waves · Official Selection

The NEW WAVES Best Film Award comes with a prize of €20,000 if the film is entered by a Spanish distribution company. Otherwise, the amount allocated will be €10,000 for the company that has entered the film in the competition. In addition, a prize of €10,000 Euros will be awarded to the distribution company that acquires the rights to commercial screening in Spain, subject to the commercial release taking place within twelve months of the closing date of the competition.

The NEW WAVES Special Award is worth €10,000, to be allocated to the production or distribution company which entered the film in the competition.

‣ The New Waves/Non_Fiction · Official Selection

The NEW WAVES/NON FICTION Best Film Award grants €10,000 to the director, production company, or distributor that entered the film in the competition.

‣ Endless Revolutions · Official Selection

The Official Competition ENDLESS REVOLUTIONS Best Film Award comes with an economic endowment of €10,000, to be allocated to the director, production company, or distributor that entered the film in the competition.

‣ Extraordinary Stories · Official Selection

The EXTRAORDINARY STORIES Best Film Award is worth €10,000, to be allocated to the production, distribution company or Director which entered the film in the competition.

‣ Awards for Best Direction

Prize for Best Director for First or Second European Feature Film, whose film premieres at the Seville Festival, consisting of €5,000, which will be awarded to the director of the winning film. Films participating in the festival's Official Selections will also be eligible for this award: Official Selection, The New Waves, The New Waves/Non-Fiction, Permanent Revolutions and Extraordinary Stories.

‣ EFA Selection (European Film Academy) 2022

GRAND AUDIENCE AWARD for the Best Film of the EFA SELECTION 2022 grants a prize of €12,000, dedicated to the film’s distributor or company that registered the film. Films that have been theatrically released in Spain will not be eligible for the cash prize.

‣ Andalusian Panorama

The prize for The Best Feature\Film in the PANORAMA ANDALUZ section is worth €5,000 and will go towards the director, production company or distributor who has registered the film in the festival. Films that have been theatrically released in Spain will not be eligible for the monetary prize.

‣ Cinephiles of the Future and Europa Junior

CINEPHILES OF THE FUTURE award endorsed with 5.000 euros for the films for children over 12 years old, destined to the director, production company or distributor who has entered the film in the festival.

EUROPA JUNIOR Prize awarded to films for children under 12 years of age, endowed with 5,000 euros for the winning film, destined to the director, production company or distributor who has entered the film in the festival.

 

The festival management will forward to the administrative department of ICAS, the data of the awarded films entered, previously requesting from each recipient the bank and tax details for the processing of the same, as established in the seventh clause, as well as a certificate confirming their role as production company, distribution company or director of the film. In addition to the certificate accrediting the rights to the film.

 

‣ Other Awards  

In addition to the aforementioned prizes, depending on the agreements signed with other institutions linked to the Seville Film Festival, other prizes are awarded with a financial endowment. These prizes will be assumed directly by the collaborating institutions. For 2022 they are: 

AC/E Award to the Best Spanish Film Director

AC/E Award to the Best Spanish Film Director, that celebrates the World or Spanish premiere in the Seville Film Festival, with an economic endowment of 10,000€ that will go to the director of the awarded work, and it will be paid by AC/E to the Director. Films participating within our Official Selection will be eligible for this prize (Official Section, New Waves, New Waves/Non Fiction, Endless Revolutions, Extraordinary Stories).

Andalusian Panorama Shorts Films

In collaboration with the Pablo de Olavide University, the following awards are established, with a financial endowment and whose payment corresponds to the aforementioned University:

  • The Rosario Valpuesta Award to the Best Short Film of the ANDALUSIAN PANORAMA/SHORT FILM Section is worth 2,000€, to be allocated to the person or production company which entered the winner short film in the competition.

  • The Rosario Valpuesta Special Prize for the artistic contribution, in any of its forms, of the Andalusian Short Film Panorama section, with an economic endowment of 1,000€.

Short Film Script Award

The University of Seville, through its Center for Cultural Initiatives (CICUS), in collaboration with the Seville European Film Festival, announces the European Film-Screenwriting Award University of Seville - 2022.

  • 1,500€ for the best short film script in the fiction category

  • 1.500€ for a short film script in the non-fiction category .

Both prizes will be paid by the University of Seville directly to the winners. The deadline for submission will be determined for each edition by the University of Seville. The terms and conditions of this call for entries are available at https://cicus.us.es/premioguion2022/ 

 

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION

Films selected for competition must meet the following requirements:

  • European (co-)produced feature films.

  • Produced after January 1st of the year prior to the celebration of the corresponding edition of the Festival.

  • The films must not have been screened in Spain (with the exception of the EFA Selection and Panorama Andaluz).

  • The participation of short films is limited to retrospectives, cycles and the Andalusian Short Film Panorama section.

The organisation reserves the right to directly invite films to participate in the festival through other channels, with a formal invitation that may take place at any time before the festival is held.

 

JURIES

The designation of the members of the Jury shall be made annually for each edition of the Festival upon the proposal of the Festival Management, by means of a resolution issued by the corresponding entity.

In accordance with article 22.1 of the Law 38/2003, the prize will be awarded by the Vice-presidency of the ICAS based on the jury's decision.

  • The Juries of the Official Section and the New Waves/Non-Fiction, ACE/E Award for the Best Spanish Director, the Award for Best Director of a First or Second European Feature Film will be made up on the basis of personalities of special relevance in the spheres of cinema and culture.

  • The CampUS Jury, formed by university students, will be set up for the two awards in the New Waves section.

  • The prize in the Endless Revolutions section will go to the film awarded by the International Critics' Jury (FIPRESCI).

  • The prizes in the Panorama Andaluz Feature Films and Panorama Andaluz Short Films sections will be awarded by a jury made up of members of the Andalusian Film Writers' Association (ASECAN) and representatives of different Spanish Film Academies.

  • The Extraordinary Stories Award is decided following a public vote by the audience at the screenings, going to the film that obtains the highest score after the votes have been counted.

  • Within the EFA Selection, the Audience Grand Prize will be awarded, decided by popular vote of those attending the screenings, and will go to the film with the highest score after the votes have been counted.

  • The Europa Junior and Cinephiles of the Future prizes will be awarded by the popular vote of the students attending the screenings of these sections and will go to the film that obtains the highest score after the votes are counted.

Jury members shall not include individuals involved in the production or exhibition of the films on which they are called upon to give their verdict. The Juries will adapt their actions to the system of collegiate bodies established in Law 40/2015 of October 1st on the Legal Regime of the Public Sector. Likewise, they will have the power to resolve any doubts that may arise in the interpretation of this Call. Records of each of the jury sessions will be drawn up by the secretary appointed for this purpose, who must be a member of the Seville City Council and of the ICAS department.

The rulings of the Juries of the competitive sections shall be final and shall be made public.


 

FILMS RECEIVING AWARDS

The prize will be paid to the person who registered the film in the festival*, being the person who has the legal authority to participate in the festival under the assumption that all the parties involved (distributor, producer, director...) are aware and have agreed on the conditions of the participation.

*With the exception of:

  • The Award for Best Director of a First or Second European Feature Film, which will be paid to the director himself/herself.

  • The AC/E Award for the Best Spanish Director will be payed by Acción Cultural Española to the Director.

  • The Andalusian Panorama Short Films Awards will be payed by the Pablo de Olavide University.

 

CONDITIONS OF PARTICIPATION

The submission of films in the festival is free of charge and will be done through the correct completion of the following online form: LINK to the form.

Selected films can in no case be unilaterally withdrawn from the festival programme by the person or production company that has entered the film in the festival, and the requirements of the section in which the film is included must be met until the presentation of the film in the SEFF. This selection will remain confidential until the Festival makes its official announcement.

The festival recognizes the person signing this confirmation as the only one to negotiate all the aspects of the participation of the film within this edition of the Festival and as the only responsible person among others that might have taken part in the production of the film.

The Festival will recognise the signatory of this confirmation as the sole interlocutor to negotiate all aspects related to the participation of the film in the event and as the sole responsible before other companies or persons who may have participated in the production of the film.

Films invited by the Selection Committee. Registration before 20 September 2022 at 23:59h through the registration form on the official website of the Seville Festival (http://festivalcinesevilla.eu/), providing a permanent reproduction link and password. It is also compulsory to fill in the Festival registration form.

Films invited by the Selection Committee. The Festival may select and invite the titles it considers appropriate up to the starting dates of the event. Even so, films must formalise their registration through the corresponding link and form.

Registration can be made from the day after the publication of the extract of this call in the Official Gazette of the Province and will end on 20 September 2022 at 23.59 hours; by transfer of the National Database of Subsidies (BDNS), in accordance with art. 18 and 20 of Law 38/2003, of 17 November, General of Subsidies, operating the BDNS as a national system of publicity of the subsidies.

This Call for applications will be published on the ICAS website of the Seville City Council and on the official website of the Festival http://festivalcinesevilla.eu/ .

 

SCREENING COPY DELIVERY

The registered films can be sent via a permanent reproduction link, for which a password will be provided if necessary, and which must be specified in the registration form.

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR SCREENING COPIES OF SELECTED FILMS

Digital Cinema Package (DCP) copies must comply with DCI regulations and will remain in the possession of the Seville Festival until the end of the last screening scheduled at the Festival.

Before being sent to Seville, the correct functioning of each copy (colour, audio/video synchronisation, subtitling, etc.) must be certified at source by the company that has registered the selected film, through a server that complies with DCI regulations.

In addition, this company will provide the festival's Technical Department (tecnica@festivalcinesevilla.eu) with the necessary KDMs (or, alternatively, a DKDM) for each of the servers in the venues where the film will be screened.

All screening copies of selected films must be submitted in the original version, with English or Spanish subtitles. If necessary, a non-subtitled original version of the film will also be requested. In the event that the screening copies are subtitled in English, the dialogue list of the subtitles, together with the downloadable link of the final version, must be sent in advance, prior to the date determined annually by the Programming Department of the Festival in each edition.

 

PROMOTIONAL MATERIAL FOR SELECTED FILMS

Once the film has been confirmed, the participant shall provide sufficient documentation and material to promote the film by September 30, 2022 (pressbooks, filmmaker's photograph, stills of the film, posters and other media, etc.).

The festival will be entitled to facilitate these promotional materials in high definition to the different television channels or media outlets that request them.

The cession of the images to ICAS for promotion purposes must be authorised by the corresponding copyright holders, and under no circumstances will ICAS or the Seville European Film Festival office be held responsible if the corresponding licence for the cession of the aforementioned images was not previously obtained.

 

PROGRAMME AND ADDITIONAL PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS

The festival management will decide the venue, order, date and time of screening of all the selected films, as well as the number of screenings stipulated within the framework of the festival. The SEFF reserves the right to hold simultaneous screenings of the same film in different cinemas, if this is necessary due to limited capacity at some of the festival venues.

The selected films must have completed the corresponding registration form within the established deadlines. This selection will remain confidential until the festival makes its official announcement.

Under no circumstances may the selected films be unilaterally withdrawn from the event by the person or production company that has entered the film in the festival, and they must comply with the requirements of the section in which they participate until their presentation at the Seville European Film Festival.

The Festival will recognise the person or production company that has entered the film as the sole interlocutor to negotiate all aspects related to the participation of the film in the event and as the only party responsible to other companies or persons that may have participated in the production of the film.

Participation implies acceptance of this call for entries. The interpretation of this call for entries is the responsibility of the festival management. 

 


The economic endowment of the prizes allocated exclusively by the Instituto de la Cultura y las Artes de Sevilla (ICAS) an institution dependent on the Seville City Council, organiser of the Seville Festival, will be subject to the applicable tax regulations. In compliance with the provisions of the tenth Additional Provision of Law 38/2003, of November 17th, General Law on Subsidies, and although the present Call regulates the granting of prizes and not expressly subsidies, the aforementioned Law shall apply as well as the Ordinance approving the bases of the subsidies in the City Council of July 14th, 2005, as long as it is compatible with the nature of the same. The agreement of the call will be published on the ICAS website, as well as in the National Database of Subsidies (BDNS), with an extract featured in the Official Gazette of the Province of Seville, via the BDNS.
