Lucrecia Martel | Argentina, Brazil, Spain, France, Mexico, Netherlands, Portugal, USA, Lebanon | 2017 | 115 min. | O.V. Spanish with English subtitles

Possessor of an impeccable and very personal filmography (La Ciénaga, The Holy Girl and The Headless Woman), Lucrecia Martel has chosen Zama, the well-known novel by Antonio di Benedetto for her return (co-produced by El Deseo, Almodóvar’s production company): her personal (anti) Aguirre, Wrath of God. Diego de Zama (Daniel Giménez Cacho in his best role), a minor officer for the Spanish Crown in the remote New World, waits desperately for a transfer. Sensual (with Lola Dueñas’ character), sweaty, tense, delirious, a kind of existential western driven by forces of chaos, and by a final commission that will take Zama to his absolute limit.
