Valeska Grisebach | Germany, Bulgaria, Austria | 2017 | 120 min. O.V. English, German and Bulgarian with English and Spanish subtitles

Eleven years after Nostalgia, with which she won the Best Film Award at the Gijon Festival, Grisebach has made Western (from the producer of Toni Erdmann), one of the most awaited films of this year and finalist for the LUX Awards. The mysterious, laconic Meinhard, ex-legionnaire in Afghanistan and Africa, arrives with a group of German workers to set up a hydraulic plant on the border between Bulgaria and Greece. The workers don’t trust the locals, and they won’t trust Meinhard either once they get to know him. It’s a matter of might is right in this Europe which, like the wild west, is living though times of change as regards people and resources.
