Ermanno Olmi | Italy | 2017 | 76 min. | O.V. Italian with English and Spanish subtitles
Who was Carlo Maria Martini, and why has he meant so much to the people of Milan and to history? Olmi, who had been interviewing the so-called “cardinal who dares to think” since his arrival in Milan in 1980, has made a patient, oblique portrait of the man behind the position. A studious Jesuit, open to dialogue, who looked for understanding from lay societies, the counter-figure of Ratzinger and uncomfortable in the bosom of the Church. Olmi, a living legend of Italian cinema who has known how to capture time and work like no one, gives us a film which goes beyond religion and in which thought works as a way of expanding the universe and learning its infinity.
