João Pedro Rodrigues

João Pedro Rodrigues | Portugal | 2016 | 118 min. V.O. Portuguese with English and Spanish subtitles

It has been said of the latest film from Rodrigues (A última vez que vi Macau), with which he won the Best Director Award at Locarno, that it is “a Pasolini-style western, a re-reading of Deliverance (Boorman) combined with the story of St. Anthony of Padua”. Fernando, a solitary ornithologist, has an accident in his canoe while bird watching. He is rescued by some Chinese pilgrims from whom he ends up fleeing in order to venture deeper into the forest, doorway to a world of myths, pagan gods, saints and ephebes, where we will witness the ornithologist’s transfiguration into an apocryphal, queer saint.
