Xavier Beauvois | France | 2017 | 138 min. | O.V. French with English and Spanish subtitles
Xavier Beauvois (Of Gods and Men) situates his film in World War I to tell the horrors of conflict from the ruptures at a personal level. With the men in the trenches, the women hold out at home. Nathalie Baye is the matriarch of the Pardiers’ farm. Burdened down by the work, she seeks the help of a young stranger, Francine (Iris Bry, the revelation of the year). But when the Pardier men come home on leave, emotions are stirred and love flourishes. A love that comes at the wrong time, with distances, misunderstandings and obstacles, in a film with meticulous impressionist images and music by Michel Legrand.
