Rajko Grlić | Croatia, Slovenia, United Kingdom, Czech Republic | 2017 | 90 min. O.V. Croatianwith English and Spanish subtitles

“A love story about hate”: that is how this comedy by Rajko Grlić (Just Between Us) is described. It takes the microworld of a community of neighbours in order to talk about the still raw resentments from former Yugoslavia, prejudices and solidarity. Vjeko is a Croatian professor who looks after his old, cruel father, and dresses as a woman at night. One day he gets beaten up and is helped by his neighbour Maja, a nurse, who in exchange for that favour asks him to teach the constitution to her husband, Ante, a Serb, who has to study it to keep his job in the police. A spectacular combination of one’s homophobia and the other’s ethnic hatred.
