EUROPEAN FILM ACADEMY SELECTION

SUMMER 1993

OUT OF COMPETITION

CARLA SIMÓN

Carla Simón | Spain | 2017 | 97 min. | O.V. Catalan with Spanish subtitles

Summer 1993 has been compared by critics to a landmark in Spanish cinema: The Spirit of the Beehive, by VIctor Erice, for the depth of its look at the world of childhood and for its skill in combining luminosity with the discovery of death. And this autobiographical fiction by Carla Simón is certainly another landmark in Spanish cinema. With its rigour and emotion, it has managed to be preselected for the Oscars in a career full of awards which began in Berlin and continued in Bafici and Malaga. Frida, a 6 year old girl, faces the first summer of her life with her new adoptive family after the death of her mother. With the presence of its producer, Valérie Delpierre, a member of the International Jury.
