FAR FROM LAWS. THE CINEMA OF MARGARIDA CORDEIRO AND ANTÓNIO REIS

Rite of Spring

Manoel de Oliveira

Manoel de Oliveira | Portugal | 1963 | 90 min. | O.V. Portuguese with English and Spanish subtitles

While looking for locations for a film in Trás-os-Montes, Oliveira came across the representation of the Passion of Christ which is celebrated annually in the open air in that remote rural region. Seduced by it Oliveira returned, this time accompanied by António Reis and Paulo Rocha, to film with the town’s inhabitants a representation of their own representation: this gave rise to this hypnotic, disturbing film, rooted in both the popular and the modern, with incredible colours and faces, whose surprising ending links the anachronistic ritual with the tumultuous 60s in which it was produced.
