Anyone who comes out of the closet in Syria will face prison sentences, social rejection and ISIS violence. That is why Mr. Gay Syria, rather than a beauty competition, is a form of survival and resistance for a group of Syrian men in Istanbul, where they have been arrived as a result of their dual condition of outlaws and war refugees. Through the story of Husein, a barber who leads a double life between his conservative family and his gay identity, and of Mahmoud, founder of the LGBTI movement in Syria, we follow a beauty contest where emotion takes precedence over ostentation: visibility against oppression.
