Two films that are the prologue and epilogue to the season: on the one hand, the film that united Antonio Reis with Margarida Cordeiro, who at that moment was working in a psychiatric hospital where the Jaime in the title lived. Thanks to that union, the portrait of this outsider artist, a peasant who was shut away for thirty eight years, lost in the impossible world of his paintings, shows him as exceptional and universal instead of as an abnormality. On the other hand, Farpões, Baldios, by Marta Mateus, a true renovator of Cordeiro and Reis’s way of making cinema. The children, the roots of the earth, the deep wrinkles of the peasants, inhabit this beautiful, poetic film that evokes the Agrarian reform of 1976, which for a brief period of time recognized the historic struggles of rural Portugal.
