FAR FROM LAWS. THE CINEMA OF MARGARIDA CORDEIRO AND ANTÓNIO REIS

Change one's life

Paulo Rocha

Paulo Rocha | Portugal | 1966 | 94 min. | O.V. Portuguese with English and Spanish subtitles

When he comes back from military service in Africa, Adelino discovers that his beloved Júlia has married his brother. A disappointment after which he will meet the wild Albertina (Isabel Ruth, the Portuguese Anna Karina): a change of life is approaching. Rocha’s response to Oliveira’s Acto da primavera (and in some way to Varda’s Pointe Courte), precursor of Trás-os-Montes, and later of Pedro Costa’s cinema. The songs, the popular dances and the hard work at sea are interwoven with a fiction in which the town’s inhabitants and professional actors are the protagonists.
