FAR FROM LAWS. THE CINEMA OF MARGARIDA CORDEIRO AND ANTÓNIO REIS

BLOOD

Pedro Costa

Pedro Costa | Portugal | 1989 | 99 min. | V.O. en portugués subtitulada en español e inglés

Pedro Costa (Cavalho Dineiro), who was a student of Reis, made his debut at 29 with Blood, a film with Nicholas Ray, Bresson, Badlands and The Night of the Hunter (among other exquisite references) in its sights. Vicente, 17, and his brother Nino, 10, look after themselves during their father’s absences. Their mother isn’t around nor is she expected. When the father leaves and doesn’t come back, the two brothers hide the fact and carry on with their lives. But a violent inheritance from the father’s shady dealings becomes a threat, and unites them with Clara, a school worker with whom they’ll form a secret family.
