Mathieu Amalric | France | 2017 | 98 min. | O.V. French with English and Spanish subtitles

As well as being one of the most expressive and prolific actors in Europe, Mathieu Amalric is a force of nature as a director. Facets which are gloriously mingled and confused in Barbara, an “anti-biopic” of the French singer, here played and sung by Jeanne Balibar. Smoke and mirrors, a lively fusion of fictions, woven together by Barbara’s beautiful songs, in which a director (Amalric) directs the actress playing the singer: at time we get lost in the film within the film, and then return to the actress’s dedication as she rehearses, acts, films and lives. An effervescent film-Russian doll full of joyous nostalgia.
