REMINE, THE LAST WORKING CLASS MOVEMENT

REMINE, THE LAST WORKING CLASS MOVEMENT

Marcos Martínez Merino

Marcos Martínez | Spain | 2014 | 102 min | V.O. Spanish and Asturian subtitled in Spanish and English

The 2012 strike by Asturian miners in protest against the government’s brutal cutbacks took the journalist Marcos Martínez by surprise when he was preparing a documentary about the Cuencas Mineras. As a reaction to what was happening, that project mutated to become this film, set in the heart of the workers’ struggle: among the barricades and blocked-off roads, alongside the families of the miners occupying a mine as a protest, walking with the protagonists of this story in their march on Madrid, and surrounded by the uncontainable emotion of popular support, combative fist raised. ReMine is the perfect, vigorous reverse angle of the scant media coverage of that overwhelming summer of worker resistance.
