Ras and Calvin spend their days immersed in Cali’s urban culture, united by their friendship and by their unshakable militancy as graffiti artists. Ras has just been invited to leave his job after stealing paint, and Calvin looks after his grandmother while he avoids going to his Fine Arts classes at the university. Their longing for freedom can be glimpsed beneath their indolent attitude, and after idle time spent doing murals, meeting friends, going to concerts, doing various errands and making family visits, they end up in a place they’ve never been: the connection they’ve been looking for. Los hongos is pure adolescent essence distilled from Ruiz Nava’s youthful memories.
