Ulrich Seidl

Ulrich Seidl | Austria | 2014 | 86 min. | V.O. German subtitled in Spanish and English

Seidl returns to non-fiction from the subsoil of his country, with this exploration of the basements in Austrian homes. A place where the owners give free rein to their hobbies, and the setting for the most varied obsessions. Choosing the more grotesque, bizarre side of reality, Seidl applies his incisive, implacable eye to a human fauna that includes everything from a hunter who has set up a whole museum of stuffed deer in his basement to a man who uses his alternately to practice opera arias or as a shooting range, and including a woman who is fond of terrifyingly real baby dolls, Nazis who meet up to play the tuba and a sado-masochist who works for Caritas, among many others.
