The Lovers on the Bridge

The Lovers on the Bridge

Leos Carax

Leos Carax | France | 1991 | 125 min. | O.V. French subtitled in Spanish and English

Here, Carax’s recurring Alex is a circus artist who lives on the Pont Neuf, the oldest bridge over the Seine, has problems with alcohol and is addicted to sleeping pills. One day he meets with a painter who is living on the streets after a painful break-up, and who is losing her eyesight due to a disease. An unlikely but powerful love develops between them. Carax transforms the sordidness and pathos of the story into pure cinematic energy (desperate euphoria every minute) with a narrative and aesthetic excess, a vigorous, constantly moving camera and theuse of the almost supernatural bodies of Binoche and Lavant.
