He was born in New York and studied at the University of Southern California School of Cinema-Television. Gray made his debut in 1994, at the age of 25, with Little Odessa, which won the Critics’ Award at Deauville and the Silver Lion at Venice, and was also nominated for the Independent Spirit Awards. In 2000 he wrote and directed The Yards, starring Joaquin Phoenix, who would become his regular actor. The film, which opened in Cannes, also had performances from Mark Wahlberg, CharlizeTheron, Faye Dunaway, Ellen Burstyn and James Caan. His crime drama, We Own The Night (with Wahlberg, Phoenix, Eva Mendes and Robert Duvall) also opened in competition at Cannes in 2007. His next film, Two Lovers (2008), starring Phoenix, Gwyneth Paltrow and Isabella Rosellini, was nominated for the Césars and opened in Cannes, where he also opened his latest film, The Immigrant, in the Official Section.
