Baltasar Kormákur | Iceland | 2012 | 95 min. | O.V. Icelandic subtitled in Spanish and English

Kormákur has filmed a famous incident that really occurred in Iceland in 1984. A fishing boat sank on a March night in the icy waters off the Westman Islands. The whole crew died, except for one man who miraculously survived the glacial temperatures in subhuman conditions. GuolaugurFriobjofsson, “Gulli”, an ordinary man, not at all athletic, become a national hero overnight, and also the subject of scientific investigations because of his unusual exploit. A film about survival that focuses on the human side and about which Kormákur says: “When dealing with big subjects such as “human strength” or the power of nature, it is more powerful to focus on the simple things. Things that often go unnoticed; questions that at times, out of arrogance, we feel aren’t important.”
