Stray Dogs

Tsai Ming-Liang

Tsai Ming-Liang | Taiwan, France | 2013 | 138 min. | O.V.. mandarin, chinese subtitled in Spanish / English

After being abandoned by his wife, a man survives in Taipei with the scant amount he gets paid for being a “human billboard” next to a highway. He sleeps with his two children in an abandoned container, and the children spend their days wandering round a supermarket. The “stray dogs” to which the title refers are rescued from their wanderings by a strange woman who gives them shelter in an impressive, decadent house. An oblique, mysterious story about life in the labyrinthine outskirts of a large city and about paternal-child love, which Tsai Ming-Liang reveals in long, sustained shots, like paintings, with a powerful aesthetic and a measured interpretive and dramatic tension.
