Gianfranco Rosi | Italy, France | 2013 | 93 min. | O.V. Italian subtitled in Spanish / English
Using as a narrative thread the adventures of Marco Polo in Invisible Cities, by Italo Calvino, Rosi travels along the sides of the GRA, the Grande Raccordo Anulare, the highway that circles Rome (with a nod in its title to the quest for the Holy Grail, Sacro Graal in Italian). Rosi comes across an exotic collection of people: from one of the last eel fishermen on the Tiber or a scientist studying palm tree diseases to some impoverished nobles rehoused on the outskirts. A colourful necklace whose beads are Rosi’s character studies –full of humour, at times disturbing and at times deeply human- strung on the chain around the neck of the Italian capital that is the GRA.
