Double Play: James Benning and Richard Linklater

Gabe Klinger | France, Portugal, United States | 2013 | 70 min. | O.V. English subtitled in Spanish

The legendary series founded by Janine Bazin and André S. Labarthe, Cinéastes de notre temps, has a new episode from the critic and programmer Gabe Klinger which, as its title suggests, is a kind of double bill. Klinger brings together two filmmakers who would appear to be diametrically opposed: James Benning, an independent filmmaker whose work is radically experimental, and Richard Linklater, a narrative filmmaker who works mainly in the field of fiction. Old acquaintances –Benning was the first out-of-town speaker at the Austin Film Society, founded by Linklater in the 80s- who stroll through old film studios and play baseball while they talk about cinema, and whose viewpoints have much more in common than might first be thought.
