Pedro Costa, Manoel de Oliveira, Víctor Erice, Aki Kaurismäki | Portugal | 2012 | 93 min. | O.V. Portuguese, English subtitled in Spanish
A collective film (with four illustrious participants) that arose from the series of films commissioned when Guimaräes was European Capital of Culture in 2012. In O conquistador, conquistador Manoel de Oliveira talks ironically about the “conquest” of the 21st century: that of the historic centre of Guimaräes by a group of tourists. O tasqueiro, by Kaurismäki, is also set in the centre of the city. Here the taciturn humour of Passing Clouds is transplanted to a Portuguese barman in a bar with no customers. Vidrios partidos, by Erice, focuses on the workers in a factory that was the flagship of the Portuguese textile industry, a magnificent building in ruins and whose glorious past he imagines. Finally, Costa shuts his Ventura in with a soldier in the surrealist space of an elevator in Sweet Exorcism, confronting his country’s historical memory.
