Berberian Sound Studio

Peter Strickland

Peter Strickland | United Kingdom | 2012 | 88 min. | O.V. English and Italian subtitled in Spanish and English

Strickland evokes the giallo aesthetic to lead us into his (disturbing) back room accompanied by an English sound engineer hired by an Italian studio in the 70s. A story with impalpable suspense, in which the timid sound engineer is absorbed and almost kidnapped by his employers, and in which the terror is permanently off screen, strangely embodied by the dubbing actors, the creators of the sound effects and the musicians who work on the soundtrack (here played by the retro-futuristic Broadcast). The cinema ends up absorbing an alienated, nocturnal reality in an expression of pure, primeval horror.
