Wasted Youth

Wasted Youth

Argyris Papadimitropoulos, Jan Vogel

Greece, 2011, 98 min., Greek

Two fates come across tragically in the middle of the heated Athenian summer: Harris is an erratic 16-year-old young boy who sorts his obligations on his skateboard; and Vassalis, a middle-aged policeman who is plunged into a crisis that seems to have paralyzed his willpower.

Papadimitropoulos and Vogel regard their Wasted Youth as an urgent film in which, with a simple script outline, they jumped into. They already knew, however, from where they wanted to start: the real event that shook the country in December 2008 and led to three intense days of riots in the capital. Nevertheless, the film goes beyond the event through fiction, transforming it into the real seed from which sprouts a metaphoric portrait of an Athens on the edge of breaking down.
