The Young Girls turn 25

The Young Girls turn 25

Agnès Varda

France, 1993, 63 min., French.

Jacques Demy filmed Les demoiselles de Rochefort in 1966, with Catherine Deneuve and her sister Françoise Dorléac. Twenty five years later, Agnès Varda takes advantage on this occasion and on the town celebration to commemorate the film. She returns to shoot a documentary about such a moving encounter. Past and present blend here their dense domains, while the friends, the singular family of cinema, take delight in a happiness though not exempt from a deep, melancholic slant (introduced by Dorléac's early death just a short time after shooting Demy's film, and also due to the filmmaker disappearance in 1990).
