The Hunt

The Hunt

Thomas Vinterberg

Denmark, 2012, 115 min., Danish

Eurimages Competition

Synopsis:

Thomas Vinterberg seems to return to his famous Celebración (1998) to regain his momentum with The Hunt, if not formally, at least in the content. In this way, the themes of family and community as protecting groups which can suffer from a fit of hysteria, and which functions (protection and shelter) can be ominously perverted shape the encompassing structure that traps the protagonist of The Hunt. Lucas, a recently divorced man in his forties starts to raise his head again thanks to his friends, his son, a new relationship, his work as nursery assistant and his involvement in the traditions of the small town he lives in. However, a girl’s fib is slowly spreading, and that will change the course of it all.

Thomas Vinterberg

Born in Copenhagen in 1969, Vinterberg attracted attention since his film school graduating short film, Last Round (1993), winning prizes in Tel Aviv and Munich. His first film, the road movie The biggest heroes (1996), made his name in Denmark, but it was two years later, with Celebración, when Vintenberg made the leap to the international market. Produced according to the principles of Dogme 95 -a movement founded in 1995 by Vintenberg himself, along with Trier, Levring and Kragh-Jacobsen- Celebración is a chronicle of a dystopian banquet where the secrets of a family are tragically revealed. The film won plenty of prizes, from Cannes to New York, and it was adapted for theatre. After this successful start, the Dane has followed a career full of up-and-downs, with titles like It’s all about Love (2003), Querida Wendy (2004) or Submarino (2010), but has been always present in the best festivals.
