Paradise: Love

Paradise: Love

Ulrich Seidl

Austria/Germany/France, 2012, 120 min, German

Eurimages Competition

The heroine of the first film of the trilogy that the Austrian Seidl has devoted to the idea of Paradise is what in Kenya is called a “Sugar Mama”; that is to say, a mature white woman looking for African youngsters selling his sexual potential at a reasonable price. Teresa, a 50-year-old Austrian woman, and with a daughter reaching the puberty, travels to the African country to materialise her dream of uninterrupted carnal pleasure. However, she bumps into the harsh reality of the sex industry and exploitation. Seidl, always maintaining a balance between laughs and uneasiness, reiterates his sharp look over his compatriots, distant heirs of the Austro-Hungarian Empire who now spread urges around the world.

Ulrich Seidl

Ulrich Seidl (Viena, 1952) is one of the most polemic and popular European authors in the current picture. He studied journalism, art history and theatre in Viena before starting the studies in his Film Academy, from which he was invited to leave following the scandal of his second work Der Ball (1982). Eight years later, he would triumphantly return with his first feature film, Good News, the film that would settle the hallmarks of his stylistic identity: fiction and documental hybrid with corollary topics and actors/bodies, assumption of continuity as the concatenation of tableaux where there is room for almost everything, and a vocation for perturbing the audience, making them laugh and take fright with no continuity solution. Later, would popularity–Models (1999), Hundstage (2001), Import/Export (2007)...– and recognition arrive in renowned festivals – this year he got the Grand Jury's Prize in Venice with Paradise: Faith, award he already received in 2001 with Hundstage, also awarded with the Jury’s Prize in Fantasporto and winner at the Gijón International Film Festival–.
