Synopsis:

Janet travels to a Vienna where she finds out that her cousin is in a comatose condition in a hospital. She doesn’t know the city, and looks for shelter at the Kunsthistorisches Museum, where she approaches a guard that will end up offering to help her with addresses and the interviews with the doctors. Both are lonesome persons who have been a long time without opening up to others and therefore a deep, platonic tie begins to appear between them. Cohen -who always portrayed landscapes, men and women, opting for the association of images and ideas and, in certain cases, for a porous, modest narrative- films here pieces and cuts out Brueghel or Rembrandt. He is not far from Aby Warburg, of Art as an image laboratory that breaks the narrowness of time as a progress.

Jem Cohen

Cohen, born in Kabul in 1962 due to his father profession, is a filmmaker who lives in New York, a city to which he has dedicated several works. Experimental documentary maker, textures and formats explorer (16mm., 35mm., Super 8, video), photographer and installation artist, Cohen began to be known, above all, through a close association with the world of music, that linked him to R.E.M., Fugazi or Patti Smith. However, he must be seen as a multidisciplinary essayist that, after knowing the industry from inside (working for Sayles, Cox or Scorsese), chooses to explore a marginal enclave that gathers reflection (i.e., his interest in Walter Benjamin), music and activism. Among his greater duration works must be noted Benjamin Smoke (2000) and especially Chain (2004), where he spoke with big names from the American experimental scene like Thom Andersen or James Benning.
