Gonzalo García Pelayo

Spain, 1975, 105 min., Spanish

Gonzalo García Pelayo made his film debut with this extremely free adaptation of the eponymous novel by the Sevillian writer Manuel Halcón. The title refers to Manuela, a young girl marked by the murder of her father, a poacher who was gunned down by a local landowner. She and her mother sell melons at the roadside in Seville in the seventies. Manuela oozes pride while all sorts of men feel irresistibly attracted to her beauty. The first to receive the gift of her love is a young widower, who approaches their stall trying to ease the heat for his little son and calm down his hunger. Sound and music experimentation, as well as the desire to enlarge the established grammar, are already evident in this talented film debut.
