L´une chante, l´autre pas

L´une chante, l´autre pas

Agnès Varda

France/Venezuela/Belgium, 1977, 115 min., French.

Synopsis:

The relationship between two female friends, Pomme and Suzanne, gets closer when the former helps the latter to raise the money to abort on her third pregnancy. Shortly after, however, Suzanne's husband commits suicide, thus forcing her to go back to the countryside to live with her parents. Ten years after, both girls meet again in a feminist demonstration against the Bobigny Trial. Pomme has become an unconventional, politically-committed singer, while Suzanne studied and works now in the area of family planning. L'une chante, l'autre pas provides Varda's defence of women rights and it does it delicately, with melancholy, even reaching at times to make an unprejudiced aesthetic category out of the corny things.
