La Pointe Courte

La Pointe Courte

Agnès Varda

France, 1955, 86 min., French.

Synopsis:

Fiction and documentary overlap each other in La Pointe Courte. On the one hand there is the record of the life in this little, impoverished fishing village, and there is also room for faint tales, like the one centred in the ups and downs of fishermen's lives, or the one of how a mother loses her son. On the other hand is the main fiction, starred by a couple in crisis -he is a man back to his native soil; she is her Parisian wife coming for a visit-. The real background heavily meddles, on which psychologically complex characters are outlined. Varda's debut film anticipated Nouvelle Vague's thought forms and beyond: the promenades of her protagonists will be visited by Resnais, Marker, Garrell, Duras, Perec...
