Jesús for a day

Verónica Castro, Helena Inverno

Portugal, 2012, 70 min., Portuguese

A new “acto de primavera” for the Portuguese cinema, but this time the focus is on a prison located in the area of Trás-os-Montes, in the north of the country. The tandem formed by Verónica Castro and Helena Inverno went there to film, from it’s very preliminary stages, the annual performance of the passion of Christ, a procession that gathers together prisoners and inhabitants from the region. The paradoxes and contradictions of such incarnations by the convicts can be already noticed during the distribution of roles and preliminary rehearsals. Nevertheless, when the convicts and free citizens intermingle in this solemn, odd ritual, spectators are not prevented from questioning themselves about the complex nature of itself.

Véronica Castro and Helena Inverno

Verónica Castro gets advantage on her anthropology and ethnography education and her interest on philosophy and Eastern religions to experiment with audiovisuals and arts. She has released films (shorts like Lullaby and Beiras) and has taken part in international exhibitions. For her part, Helena Inverno, is an artist who usually expresses herself through videos. Trained at Saint Martins, London, her multidisciplinary vocation (she has received awards in the fields of drawing, music and video) found a philosophical background by the hand of Gudo Bafu Nishijima teachings. They won the price for best Portuguese feature film at the Indielisboa, 2012, with their Jesus por um dia. They are both part of the L Praino Project which is a group of artists driven by ethnography, ecology and art. They will release their first film You only wait once this same year. This duo is currently collaborating in two hybrid projects, one of them along with Ana Borralho and João Galante, starting from the Atlas performance; while the other one has put them in contact with the Moroccan choreographer Bouchua Ouizguen.
