USSR, 1942. The occidental frontiers are being occupied by the Nazis, only groups of ambushed partisans can resist in the area. When these provoke the derailment of a train going through a town, they are arrested by the Germans, and along with the saboteurs, they also take Sushenya, an innocent rail worker living there with his family. But in the end, he is not hanged with the others and is released, leading to suspicions in the town of a possible denunciation. Thus, two of the partisans, Burov y Voitik, go down into the forest looking for revenge. Loznitsa, famous for rethinking and even refilming the World War II material left in Russia, resorts to fiction to adapt Vasil Bykov’s novel, and retake the conflict as a moral battlefield.
