Eurimages Competition

Synopsis:

The series of children's books that the Belgian Gabrielle Vincent drew during the eighties has been adapted for the big screen in this animation film. The surprising leading roles are Ernest the bear and Célestine the mouse. It took part in the last Cannes Director's Fortnight. In a world where bears drive and go to school while mice keep living in mouse holes, Ernest is a marginal street musician. Célestine is an orphan on the run from the subterranean world. The beginning of a great friendship starts when the former tries to eat the latter.

Stéphane Aubier and Vincent Patar:

Stéphane Aubier and Vincent Patar were born in Belgium in 1965, Aubier in Veviers and Patar in Gaume. They met at the l'Institut des Beaux-Arts de Saint-Luc in Liège, realising they shared common interests and a similar universe of influences and tastes. Both of them entered the L’École supérieure des arts visuels de la Cambre, in Brussels, where they graduated in 1991. Short time before graduating, they had already shared their talents to create some animation characters which soon would lead their first short film, Picpic André Shoow. This short was the cradle for a funny group of creatures (Picpic, André, Côboy, Babyroussa...) that would end up populating a well-known animation series. In 2001 they recycled some old characters to create a new series, Panique au village, led by a horse, a cowboy and an Indian. In 2009 the story was taken to the big screen in an eponymous feature film.

Benjamin Renner

After passing his university entrance examination, Benjamin Renner followed an specific course to enter an arts school. Eventually he entered Angoulême, where he obtained a diploma with a specialisation in comic strip. Soon after, he made the move to La Poudrière animation school, where he produced three short, subtle pieces (two of them with prominent roles by animals) that drawn the attention of Aubier and Patar: Le corbeau voulant imiter l’aigle (2006), Le plus gros président du monde (2006) and Le queue de la souris (2007), his graduation short film. Ernest et Célestine is his first feature film.
