Diary of a pregnant woman

Diary of a pregnant woman

Agnès Varda

France, 1958, 16 min., French.

Synopsis:

The text under the title and the first images put the enunciation of this short film in the body and look of a pregnant woman who wanders about Mouffetard street, popularly known as “la Mouffe” at the Latin neighbourhood in Paris. Like in Varda's film debut, Le Pointe-Courte, the powerful and sharp documentary shots, in this case examining the marginal street landscape and people, run in parallel to an innocent, emerging love story. Brief inter-titles (environment, pregnancy, anxiety...) tinge the look over these already raw, direct images which are already close to a kind of surrealism not exempt from a political edge.
