Cherchez Hortense

Cherchez Hortense

Pascal Bonitzer

France, 2012, 100 min., French

The veteran script writer and filmmaker Pascal Bonitzer forms here an alliance with another accomplished specialist in scriptwriting, Agnès de Sacy. Both of them describe this film as a comedy about identity and the need to gain self-confidence. Damien is the centre of the mess in Looking for Hortense. He is a Chinese culture teacher who trains French businessmen and whose life is failing at every level: the infidelity of his wife, Iva, has plunged him into a sadness that has stirred up his memories, because he kept the distance with a young Serbian waitress who approached him on the street. But Damien main problem is another one: he has promised to help Zorica, an immigrant he doesn’t even know, and will have to get close again to his father, a judiciary bigwig.

Pascal Bonitzer

Born in Paris in 1946, Pascal Bonitzer is a capital character in the French modern and contemporary cinema. Whether as a film critic, writer, script writer or director, Bonitzer’s career has been mainly related to Jacques Rivette’s one. They have collaborated artistically in fundamental films like La bande des quatre (1989), La bella mentirosa (1991), Alto bajo frágil (1995), Histoire de Marie et Julien (2003), Ne touchez pas la hache (2007) and El último verano (2009). He has also worked as script writer for André Téchiné and Raúl Ruiz. His main films as director are Rien sur Robert (1999) and Petites coupures (2003), while as a critic, theorist and writer he has released some books like Le champ aveugle and Excercice du scénario, the latter co-written with Jean-Claude Carrière.
