Athina Rachel Tsangari

Greece, 2010, 95 min., Greek

Marina is a 23-year-old young woman living with his father, an architect, in a seaside town. Observer and reluctant to human contact, Marina looks at the world from the distance, a glance screened by the music of Suicide, Sir David Attenborough’s animal documentaries, and sexual education lessons she receives from Bella—who seems to be her only friend. Athina Rachel Tsangari’s second film is surely linked to the work of Yorgos Lanthimos (Canino), who Athina helped to produce from Haos Film. It is a sharp autistic cinema, an unusual science-fiction film in which everything seems dyed by an extraterrestrial yet almost human gaze.
