Synopsis:

Nikolaj Arcel’s A Royal Affair is based on true historical events that have been later introduced into the moulds of political thriller, melodrama and tragedy. The film follows the fate of Johann Friedrich Struensee, a doctor for the poorest in Altona, by then dominated by the King of Denmark. In 1768 he accompanies the monarch on his European tour, gaining the trust of the psychologically weak King during the journey. Struensee, however, is not just thinking on his future, and along the Queen Caroline Mathilde, who is in love with him, tries to push the King to make the Enlightenment achievements start to be felt in the Nordic country. Aristochracy and accommodate classes’ opposition will represent the solid antithesis of the lovers’ revolutionary ideas, eventually taking the reformer before the courts.

Nikolaj Arcel

Nikolaj Arcel was born in Copenhagen in 1972, where he studied cinematography, specifically at the Den Danske Filmskole, graduating in 2001 with a short film, Woyzecks sidste symfoni. Though he had already directed several feature films –like the thriller Kongekabale (2004) or the family adventure La isla de las almas perdidas (2007)– before his recent success at the Berlin Festival with A Royal Affair (Golden Bears for Best Script and Best Actor, the latter awarded to Mikkel Boe Folsgaard), Nikolaj Arcel was considered until then a competent and versatile script writer, as shown by his involvement in the film adaptation of Millenium 1: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
