A night too young

A night too young

Olmo Omerzu

Czech Republic/Slovenia, 2012, 65 min., Czech.

On New Year’s Day, two 12 years old kids have their destinies crossed with a trio of adults (an attractive young woman and two men) while they’re playing in the snow. The kids volunteer to act as intermediaries in order to buy a bottle of vodka which they later take to their apartment. Attracted from the libidinous, permissive atmosphere, the kids taste alcohol and tobacco, while spying the erotic and sentimental game played, not without frictions, by the adults. The roles in the house are redistributed when one of the children starts to vomit and a policeman arrives. In little more than an hour, Omerzu produces a steely initiation story that rests in a meaningful use of close-up.

Olmo Umerzu

Olmo Umerzu was born in Ljubljana, in 1984. He did not take long to prove an early talent for audiovisual arts, obtaining when he was just thirteen years old a surprising prize for Best Script awarded by the Slovenian state television. This award allowed him shooting his first short, Almir. In 2004 he started studying at the prestigious FAMU, in Prague, and came out with a medium-length film under his belt, The second Act (2008), which was awarded at several festivals. Four years later he made his full-length debut with A night too young, presented at the Berlin Festival.
